Watching Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger throw the game winning touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes at the end of the Super Bowl, you probably wouldn’t have guessed that he was suffering from two broken ribs.
According to Sports Illustrated.com, that was exactly the case.
In his Monday Morning QB column, reporter Peter King says Roethlisberger told him about the injury during an interview Saturday night.
“Fractured ribs,” Roethlisberger told King. “Luckily in the game, I didn’t take any big hits to make ‘em burt. But I knew all along there was something wrong. There wouldn’t have been anything they could have done about fractured ribs anyway. It was just suck it up and play.”
Roethlisberger’s ribs were questioned in the days leading up to the game after he was spotted stretching his mid-torso region.
There were also reports that he had undergone an x-ray.
Still, coach Mike Tomlin denied any injuries.
Despite the injury, Roethlisberger completed 21 of 30 passes for 256 yards during the Steelers Super Bowl victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
